Handbook to be Delivered to Every Household

The 26th edition of the Royal Burgh of Haddington and District Community Council’s handbook has safely arrived from the publishers and is currently being delivered free of charge to every household in its catchment area. The handbook, the brainchild of former Community Council Chairman, the late Archie Alexander, features amongst others, articles on Haddington’s Folk Club, the Society of Change Ringers, and the Nigel Tranter Exhibition in Athelstaneford Church. As usual, the invaluable map of Haddington is included along with the much-consulted Directory of Local Organisations.

Work is already started on next year’s handbook and anyone wishing to contribute should contact Jan Wilson on janwilse3647@tiscali.co.uk or Bob Mitchell on bobmitchell6@tiscali.co.uk with their ideas.

The current handbook is available to non-residents at the price of £1.

Prestige Appointment for Anne Moffat

Local MP Anne Moffat described herself as being ‘surprised but delighted’ on being offered the job of parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to Health Minister Alan Johnstone recently and wasted no time in accepting.

Anne who spent a considerable amount of time as a nurse on the frontline before entering politics believes that this is the ideal apprenticeship for her new job and eagerly looks forward to the challenges ahead.

A shrewd political observer told ‘Newsround’ ‘What with Iain Gray’s recent appointment as leader of the Scottish Labour Party, East Lothian’s political profile has never been higher. This can only be good news for the county’. ‘Newsround’ wishes Anne all the best in her new venture.

Mouth-watering Return for Ann and Paul

Ann and Paul Kinnoch, until recently mine hosts of the popular Tyneside Tavern, are making a quick return to the hospitality trade, only yards from their previous stamping ground!

Paul explained that as from the weekend of the 21st November he and Ann will be taking over the newly baptised ‘Waterloo Bistro’ in what was most recently known as ‘The Poldrate’. They intend offering a traditional Bistro style menu augmented with a variety of Italian dishes and are currently taking orders for Christmas lunches and dinners.

Paul, who has recently been concentrating on the outside catering branch of the trade intends to keep this going and will be supplying the catering for the ‘Burns Birthday Bash’ in the Scout Hall on January 24th.

Those with happy memories of the couples’ time at the Tyneside will wish them all the best for the future.

Alice in Wonderland @ St Mary’s

With Christmas rapidly approaching our thoughts should perhaps be turning to the upcoming pantomime season; particularly if we want to see the Red Flame Dancers in action!

This local group who in the past have tread the boards on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe are performing ‘Alice in Wonderland’ at St Mary’s Primary School from Wed 3rd December until Sat 6th of December and with their

reputation going before them, ticket sales are brisk. There are two performances on the Saturday (2.30 and 7.30 pm) and tickets cost £8 for adults and £5.50 for concessions.

For tickets, contact Joanna Bain 07884317243 or www.redflamedance.co.uk

HADAS Award for New Look Doo’cot

The doo’cot in the sands which was recently reinvented as the town’s Information Centre has received a prestigious design award from Haddington and District Amenity Society (HADAS) who states that it has made ‘a valuable contribution to the quality and appearance of the local environment’.

The idea of converting the doo’cot, still actively used by the local pigeons into a visitor centre was the brainchild of former community councillor and nature observer, David Motherwell and was achieved partly through the efforts of former community

councillor, the late Gerry Gremson. During the two years that it has been open the centre has become established as an important information point and has been awarded ‘neighbourhood information point status’ by Visit Scotland.

It is staffed by volunteers, and anyone interested in joining the friendly team of enthusiasts should contact Jan Wilson on 824816 or email, janwilse3647@tiscali.co.uk

‘Let There Be Light’ as Christmas Beckons

And finally, back to Christmas. November 30th will herald what has now become the traditional Children’s Christmas Fun Day and Christmas Carol Service to mark the switching on of the town’s Christmas lights. Market Street will play host to a traditional children’s fair from 1pm until 6pm, while ‘Newsround’ is reliably informed that Santa will be in his grotto at the Corn Exchange from 1pm until 3.30 pm.

Torches will be on sale in the Corn Exchange prior to the start of the Torchlight Procession at approximately 4.45 pm. The Carol Service will take place at the Christmas tree outside the Town House at 5 pm and will incorporate the switching on of the lights. Thereafter, children will receive an apple and an orange and teas and coffees will be available in the main hall of the Town House.

It is hoped that there will be a large turn out for this family orientated occasion.
