East Lothian

by Nessie Gell

'Now we are very lucky'
the old man said to me
'living in this County
between the hills and sea'.

Gently rolling uplands
glowing fields of corn
brightly flowering meadows
fields with sheep all shorn.

Quiet winding byways
forests thick and green
streams that ripple merrily
a pleasant rustic scene.

The main road it will take you
perchance you want to go
to the busy town with bustling streets
folks rushing to and fro.

But not for me the busy street,
give me the country lane
and the earthy smell of the garden
after a refreshing shower of rain.

Oh! yes we're very lucky
as I heard the old man say,
Oh! yes we're very lucky
So I know I'm here to stay.
